European and Scandinavian Recipes
European cooking is as varied as the countries that form this kaleidoscope of lands and peoples. Recipes range from hearty stews and soups of Germany and Scandinavia to fine seafood dishes from Portugal and Spain - from the Atlantic Coast to the Iberian and Mediterranean Seas.
French recipes can be hearty or light - from fresh soups to braised meat dishes. French cooking is world renown for its regional specialties. The Provinces of France bring us a diverse cuisine as varied as the dialects of the regions.
The German and Austrian tables offer us more variations of thick soups and stews. German cooking uses a lot of one-pot meals and a glorious array of delicious, rich cakes and desserts. Austrian cooking includes cuisines which originated in the Austro-Hungarian Empire; and now that map has changed; but there are still influences from Hungary, Yugoslavia and Chechoslovakia.
Scandinavian food include lots of fish, pork and poultry. Pure and simple recipes use an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. Many Scandinavian recipes were handed down from generation to generation, dating back to the ancient Vikings. Smörgåsbord is a traditional feast served in all of Scandinavia, which includes Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden.
